Hey everyone.
I’m Syd. I’m the founder and the visionary behind UK Virtual School. For the last 10 years, I’ve worked in Education, notably as a STEM Communicator delivering sessions to over 12,000 kids through award-winning Femtinos. It’s been 6 months since our official launch of UKVS in September 2020. I thought it was time I made an appearance.
First of all, I want to say that I hope you and your family and loved ones are keeping safe. It’s been a challenging 12 months. One that has made us re-evaluate our lives like never before. Despite the challenges, I hope it has also been a chance for reflection, deep contemplation, and renewed visions for a hopeful and better future.
The last 6 months have been intense for us at UKVS. We have grown and accommodated over 200 children. I am appreciative of the feedback from parents and kids during monthly feedback meetings – the suggestions have helped us grow and prioritise what’s important to our families. Our staff, students, and families have also been through individual challenges and I hope that being part of our UK Virtual School family has given at least some stability, comfort and support.
I know being part of our school has been an enlightening and transformative experience for many of you – you’ve seen your children jump leaps and bounds in both academics and softer skills. I am proud of each and every student and also you guys, the parents! You – who are supporting, guiding, and ensuring good habits and routines are developed during these unprecedented times.
I know it’s hard.
I know at times, it feels like this nightmare will never end.
I know it can feel isolating.
One of my main drivers for setting up UK Virtual School is to demonstrate how our thinking around education needs evolving. UK Virtual School is revolutionary in many ways. We do things differently. Our 3-week terms work! There’s lots of other, perhaps more subtle, differences that we implement, incorporate, and foster that may not be as obvious.
This is only our first year – I have many things I want to phase in gradually over time including pastoral support, careers guidance, and many extra-curricular activities. I hope you have enjoyed your experience thus far!
You’ll be hearing more about me and our plans for UK Virtual School in the upcoming weeks and months, as we ease out of lockdown and return to some sort of normality.
Stay safe
Syd
